In the face of mounting housing costs and displacement caused by gentrification, extreme climate events and war, new solutions are required that allow everyone a chance to have a stable home.
Kudos to the creative minds at the East Bay Permanent Real Estate Cooperative who are working to create community and stability through taking housing off the speculative market.
Their solution borrows from various legal forms (land trusts, cooperatives, funding options) to create a new type of real estate development.

This is what solutions can look like on the level of a large neighbourhood like Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in Montreal. Thanks to CBC news for taking a bit of time away from ridiculous politicians and nefarious power struggles to show real every day heroes making a difference in their community.

Montreal environmental group Les Amis du parc Meadowbrook recently called attention to a Quebec Superior Court decision ordering the city to clean up a small stream in the west end.
In and of itself, this does not sound like anything that should make headlines, but the stream is one of the few remaining visible sections of the historic St. Pierre River and its fate could set a precedent of some importance, since filling it in is what the developer that currently owns the site suggests should be done. Despite our extending the deadline and making a final appeal for increased registration, only about half the number of people required signed up to take part in the Hands Across Our Green Spaces event planned for June 10th. Accordingly, we have stepped back for now and will be looking at how to improve participation levels for a possible revisiting of the concept next Fall.

Is Montreal Really an Environmental Dunce?
Adopted in April 2016, the Charter for the Protection of Montreal’s Green Spaces and Natural Environments was signed by over 100 city planners, biologists, sociologists, economists, public health and social housing experts, as well as about 40 citizens groups. On April 20th, to mark its first anniversary, Forum Nature Montréal handed the City a Green Report Card. The final grade came out of a survey in which participants assessed Montreal’s performance on priority environmental issues such as the protection of natural environments and biodiversity, the reduction of urban sprawl and the accessibility of green spaces for all residents. How did the City fare? An overwhelming majority of respondents gave it a poor (D) or miserable (E) rate on all counts!
